William Crooks, " Bill", 84, Johnstown, Died March 15, 2026 at Hilltop Heights. Born November 19, 1941 in New York City, son of Dr. Philip and Genevieve (Sanderson) Crooks. Preceded in death by parents; sister Barbara Ann Cook; and her husband, Robert; and sister-in-law, Eleanor Demming. Survived by wife, Linda D. (Demming), whom he married October 2, 1971; sons, twins Christopher and Michael; and Timothy (Joellyn); grandchildren, Tyler, Austin, Landon, Evan, and Anna; and brother-in-law, Edward Demming. He was a retired financial planner. He served in the US Army Reserves. Bill graduated from Mercersburg Academy in 1959 and earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Miami, where he played on the university's prestigious golf team. The game of golf has taken Bill to courses throughout the United States and Europe. He won seven Sunnehanna Country Club championships. The club titles earned him seven trips to the Sunnehanna Amateur Tournament, which is considered to be among the nation's elite amateur golf events. Bill held the Greater Johnstown Tournament record of a 289 score for twenty-six years, which he set in 1970. He matched the mark in 1972, and won the Greater Johnstown both of those years, as well in 1974. He played in the NCAA Division I men's championships in 1961 and 1962, and competed in three USGA amateur championships in 1962, 1963, and 1969. In 2008, Bill was inducted into the Cambria County Sports Hall of Fame for golf. He served as president of Sunnehanna Country Club and served on the board of directors. He also served as a volunteer for Cambria County Special Olympics. He was the co-founder of a Johnstown Thanksgiving Day Tradition, "The Turkey Bowl". For over 50 years, the event has raised over $600,000 for Easter Seals of Cambria and Somerset Counties. The tradition continues and is still growing. By request, there will be no viewing nor service.
