Shirley Doris Litman (Edelstein) passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, October 18, 2025, two days prior to her 101st birthday.
Shirley was born October 20, 1924 to the late Aaron Israel and Lilly Edelstein in Nanty Glo, Pennsylvania. After graduating from Johnstown High School, Shirley worked in Washington DC to assist with the WWII war effort. Upon returning home, she soon met the love of her life, Martin Litman, to whom she was married for over 60 years. After their family was raised, Shirley was the business manager in Marty's dental practice in downtown Johnstown for twenty years until they retired to Coconut Creek, Florida, in 1995. Shirley later moved to Pompano Beach, Florida, where she resided until her death. Shirley was preceded in death by Marty as well as her parents and her six siblings: Nathan Edelstein, Dr. Abraham Edelstein, Benjamin Edelstein, Harriet Edelstein Katz, Lester E Edelstein, and Dr. Robert Edelstein. Shirley is survived by her two daughters, Joan (Keith) Ritter and Sandra (Stephen) Hooper, as well as her two beloved grandsons, Brian Hooper and Paul (Leah) Hooper. Shirley was a member of the Beth Sholom (formerly Rodef Sholom) Temple in Johnstown Pennsylvania, as well as the Beth Sholom Sisterhood and Hadassah. She held numerous offices in many organizations and, with Marty, performed volunteer services at several hospitals. Shirley will be missed by family and friends. A funeral service will be held 11AM Wednesday at John Henderson Company Funeral Home, 215 Central Ave. with Rabbi Irvin Brandwein officiating. Interment, Grandview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Dementia Society of America.
