Randy R. Griffiths, 72, Jerome, graduated to glory January 30, 2026 at Richland Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. Born May 3, 1953 in Johnstown, son of Raymond and Ruth (Peterson) Griffiths. Preceded in death by parents; brother, Raymond "Rocky"; and sisters, Roxanne Griffiths and Robyn Schilling. Survived by wife, Elizabeth (Troxell); children, Stephany Wright, Jeremy Griffiths, Matthew Chappell, Alexa Metzgar (Matthew), and Cory Griffiths; grandchildren, Logan and Elijah Wright; Everly and Evan Griffiths; Emilee Chappell; and Oliver and Leo Metzgar; sisters, Roni Griffiths, and Regina Koslin (Michael); and brother-in-law, Christopher Troxell (Mandy) as well as many beloved cousins who were more like siblings, nieces, and nephews.
Randy was born and raised in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. He came from humble beginnings and was the eldest of six, assuming the responsibilities of his first-born role at an early age. He loved his siblings deeply and carried a lifelong sense of duty to them. Randy attended Vo Tech and was a proud member of the first graduating class. Randy enlisted in the United States Army in 1971 as an Infantryman, serving an impressive 20+ year commitment as a well-decorated career NCO before retiring as a Sergeant First Class. Throughout his service, in Randy's own words, he spanned the widest oceans, and soared the highest skies before returning home to Johnstown. Randy worked several years at the Johnstown Housing Authority where he met his "True Companion," Elizabeth, whom he affectionately called "Beautiful Wife." Randy and Elizabeth shared nearly 30 years of marriage, during which he proudly served as a devoted husband and father, eventually being promoted to grandfather and was known fondly to his grandchildren as their "P."
Randy worked countless nights at the United States Postal Service processing and distribution center in Richland, Pennsylvania, from which he recently retired after two decades of dedicated service. Despite a nearly nocturnal schedule, he always prioritized his family, often sacrificing precious hours of sleep simply to be present. Randy loved to go fishing and play golf and was an avid Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers fan. He was a brilliant man, knowing everything about a few things and a few things about everything. True to his character, he never made a show of his knowledge, offering only quiet nuggets of insight, unless it was 7 p.m. and you were lucky enough to find yourself in a "friendly" round of Jeopardy, when humility briefly took a back seat to his mildly competitive spirit.
Randy was steadfast, diligent, and quietly humble in all he did, with old-fashioned manners and a generosity of heart that marked him as a truly good and honorable man. He worked tirelessly until he no longer could, as cancer slowly stole the man we knew and loved. Through it all, he faced his diagnosis with courage and grace, never relenting, rarely complaining, and refusing to give in, even in the face of a prognosis that would have shaken anyone. True to his nature, he insisted on never inconveniencing others, always putting the needs of family and friends first. Even in his final days, he clung to these principles, offering the priceless gift of time, presence, and unwavering love to those who cherished him most.
Our family extends its deepest gratitude to Dr. Reddy, Monica, and all the staff at UPMC Hillman for honoring Randy with dignity and respect as he endured this illness. We also thank the staff of Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center, James E Van Zandt VA Medical Center, Richland Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, and AseraCare Hospice for their collective support and care, providing Randy comfort and peace in his final weeks.
