Paul Conrad Schmidt, Jr.

Paul C. Schmidt Jr. - 77 of Johnstown, passed away on May 28, 2024. Born September 19, 1946, to the late Paul C. and Kathryn D. Schmidt (Adams). Preceded in death by his wife, best friend and love of his life for 53 years, Vickie (Davis) Schmidt. Survived by children Amy Schmidt of Johnstown and son Matthew Schmidt (Brittany Baume), of Pittsburgh and grandchildren Jackson and Zachary Schmidt, brother Charles W. Schmidt (Christine Chuba), as well as nieces and nephews.  Paul was a 1964 graduate of Johnstown Central High School. He then worked in the rod mill at Bethlehem Steel for 30 years where he was a proud member of the USW Local 2634 and 2635. After the company closed, he went on to earn a Carpentry and Construction Technology Degree from Triangle Tech in Dubois. He then was self-employed as a carpenter for 17 years.  Paul served in the US Navy at Fleet Training Group, Gitmo, Cuba and aboard the USS Corry DD-817 and was fortunate to travel to eleven countries. Paul was involved in his community, serving on the Ferndale Area School Board for 20 years, the Greater Johnstown Vo-tech board for 13 years, Ferndale Borough Planning Commission, Ferndale Zoning Hearing Board, and the Greater Johnstown Water Authority Board. He also coached little league baseball and was the treasurer of the Ferndale Basketball Boosters. As a teenager, Paul was involved in YMCA-AAU swimming for eight years. He held team records in the backstroke and as backstroker on the medley relay team. Paul enjoyed taking care of his yard and home. His family meant the world to him. Spending time with his wife and children and attending their events brought him much happiness. He was an honest man, good husband and father. Friends will be received 2-4 Sunday at John Henderson Co. A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 Monday at Visitation of the B.V.M. Church. Father John Slovikovski, officiating.
