Mildred Hunter Obituary

Hunter, Mildred E. of Johnstown Pennsylvania died Saturday, May 11, 2024, and was born Jan 24, 1948, in Belgrade, North Carolina, daughter of the late Roy and Ida B (Mattocks) Jones. Mildred was a lifelong member of Mt. Sinai Institutional Baptist Church and was baptized under the pastorship of Rev. Cornelius Moore, as a youth. Former graduate of East Conemaugh High School, "Mill" or "Poo" to friends was a former employee of Memorial Hospital as a psychiatric aid. Mildred was employed by Johnstown Housing Authority and retired after 24 years as a Section 8 Coordinator and a Public Housing Manager. Mildred served in the capacity of President, Vice President & Secretary of the Coopersdale Tenant Council from years 1980-1990. Having also served on the Board of Johnstown Housing Authority's Applicant Tenant Advisory Committee, Legal Aid Client Council, and a board member of Cambria County Community Action for over 30 years and received the Paul Bennett Community Service Award in September 1993. Mildred organized the Coopersdale Tutoring Service Programs (CATS) in 1986, an afterschool tutorial youth program and the Coopersdale Garden Club in March 1987. She coordinated an inter-communal "JUST SAY NO TO DRUGS" poster contest, which resulted in a Coopersdale youth being selected as a panelist in a National White House Conference on a Drug Free America in New York. She also developed and organized the Coopersdale Resident Management Program, from an approved grant by H.U.D., for residents to self-manage their own communities. With Mildred's lifetime involvement in the community, she has received numerous plaques, awards, and accolades throughout the years. Mildred's overall passion was her cooking! She showed her love through her food and the many home-cooked dishes that she shared with family & friends. Her card ministry was also something very important to her heart.
