Mauvette (Kiel) O'Dowd died peacefully on February 25, 2026 at the age of 85. She was born November 2, 1940 in Johnstown and grew up in Portage, PA. She was the second of ten children, daughter of the late Alan and Regina (Harlan) Kiel. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Patrick, her sisters, Sr. Regina Kiel, R.S.M. and Mary Catherine Kiel (Harold Tranter), infant brother James, her Aunt Sr. Mary Fides Kiel, R.S.M. sister-in-law Mary Lou Cassisi, brothers-in-law Bob Kensinger and John Soulsby, and nephew Cris Tranter.
Mauvette is survived by her eight children: Dr. Patrick (Dr. Angie Pabalan) Holly Springs, NC; Ronald (Wendy Bullions) Sewickley, PA; Juliene (LaVega West) Muskegon, MI; Mauvette (Sam Malizia) State College, PA; Sean (Christine Malec) Johnstown, PA; Maria O'Dowd, Rockville, MD; Colleen (Bob Lewis) State College, PA; Kathleen (Richard Rickley, Jr.) The Villages, FL. There are 27 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
Mauvette is also survived by her brothers and sisters: Joseph Kiel, Adele (Charles) Kupchella, Connie Soulsby, Dot Kensinger, Patrick (Any Pena) Kiel, Michael (Janet Anderson) Kiel, Russell (Sue Sweeney) Kiel.
Mauvette graduated in 1958 from Mount Aloysius Academy and then graduated again in 1985 when it was Mount Aloysius Jr. College with a degree in Occupational Therapy. Mauvette was the keynote speaker for her graduating class. She received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2011. At the age of 50, Mauvette graduated from Western Kentucky University, where she studied Thanatology. She always said it was a privilege to work with the dying and their families. She gave numerous talks on Death and Dying.
She was Director of Pastoral Care at UPMC Lee Regional Hospital and Memorial Medical Center; Counselor and Director of Volunteers at Lee Regional Hospice.
Friends received Friday 3-7PM at Henderson Funeral Home-East Hills, 2503 Bedford Street.
Funeral Mass will be con-celebrated 10AM Saturday at St. Benedict's Catholic Church, 2310 Bedford St., Johnstown, PA. Committal will be at Richland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Sister Regina Kiel, RSM Scholarship Fund
