Loisann Jacovitz Obituary

Loisann Jacovitz, 78, passed away peacefully March 28, 2025 at Kaiser Hospital in San Leandro, California after a brave struggle with ALS. Born on September 30, 1946, Loisann graduated from Westmont-Hilltop High School in Johnstown, PA, and earned her bachelor's degree, Phi Beta Kappa and master's degree in social work at the University of Pittsburgh and University of Wisconsin-Madison. After completing her education, Loisann's passion for learning and discovery led her to join the Peace Corps and teach English in the Philippines.
Her experience in the Peace Corp stimulated a lifelong desire to embrace new cultures with an open mind and heart. After returning to the United States, Loisann spent most of her life in Alameda, CA, where she built a community of dear friends and meaningful connections. Known for her sharp wit and direct nature, Loisann had a diverse circle of friends who cherished her company. Whether engaging in stimulating conversations, enjoying a performance, or sharing a good laugh, she was always up for a memorable time. Loisann was a devoted daughter and carried on the legacy of her beloved mother, Esther Goldhaber Jacovitz, embodying generosity and charitable spirit. She lived with a profound sense of giving. She was also a cherished cousin and an extraordinary friend who left an indelible mark on many lives.
Loisann was a lifelong advocate, dedicating her career as a Child Welfare Worker to fiercely champion the foster children she represented. She had a special talent for ensuring schools met her foster children's educational needs and later guided teenagers in navigating independence. Even in retirement, she continued to mentor youth through the Independent Living Skills Program. She was also a passionate animal lover, actively supporting no-kill shelters and pet welfare organizations. Her love of the arts was evident in her devoted patronage. A subscriber to the San Francisco Symphony, Ballet, and Opera, she was also a member of the San Francisco Fine Arts Museum, visiting exhibitions regularly—her last visit just a month ago to see Mary Cassatt. Loisann was equally engaged in intellectual pursuits, attending events at the Commonwealth Club of San Francisco and the World Affairs Council to stay updated with global and political events. Loisann was also an enthusiastic traveler. She explored much of Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, always eager to learn about different cultures. Her final trip was to Spain and Portugal in 2018. A graveside funeral service will be held Friday at 10AM at Grandview Cemetery in Johnstown, PA. Funeral arrangements by John Henderson Funeral Home in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. In lieu of flowers, donations in Loisann's honor can be made to Humane World for Animals, Doctors Without Borders, or the Southern Poverty Law Center—organizations she deeply respected. Contributions can be made online via their respective donation pages.
In her memory, take a moment to meet new people, listen to their stories, and continue the
kindness and generosity Loisann so effortlessly shared with the world.
