Larry Elgin Obituary

Larry Patrick Elgin, 81, of Richland Township passed away July 22, 2026, of natural causes. Born May 9, 1945, to Merle and Mildred (Williams) Elgin. Married, and preceded in death, by his wife of 47 years, Margaret (Peggy) Elizabeth Gruca Elgin. Preceded in death by his parents, Merle and Mildred Elgin, and brother Merle Elgin. Survived by children Deborah Elgin Budash of Clarks Summit, PA; Jennifer Elgin Barber, married to Joseph Barber of Johnstown, PA; and Timothy Elgin, married to Amy Spence Elgin, of Ravenel, South Carolina. Grandchildren, David Budash, married to Renee Sarno Budash, of Staten Island, NY; Thomas and Steven Budash of Pittsburgh, PA; Andrew and Ava Elgin, of Ravenel, South Carolina; and sister, Sherry Elgin Haluska, of Johnstown, PA. Larry had a strong work ethic, was community oriented, and dedicated to his family. He worked for many years at both US Steel and McQuaide Trucking Company. He was a member of the Army National Guard and served in the Riverside Volunteer Fire Company, at one time as assistant chief. He joined fire company service after the 1977 flood when the department members helped him to keep his family safe and felt compelled to give back to his neighborhood. He was a long-time usher at St. Andrews Catholic Church. He was a founding member of the Street Survivor Car Club in Johnstown, PA, and spent much of his life restoring and showing hot rod cars. He was a talented musician and cultivated his busy tapping hands as a child into percussion. He was a drummer with the locally-popular band in the 1960's, The Continentals, as well as with several other bands. His greatest achievement was that of Dad and Pap. As a young father, he often worked multiple jobs to provide for his family including serving as the unofficial Riverside neighborhood mechanic. He attended countless car shows, events, and games with and for his children and grandchildren. He always enjoyed gatherings with extended family. He will be dearly missed. Friends will be received Friday from 10 am until noon at Henderson Funeral Home, East Hills 2503 Bedford Street, followed by a funeral Mass at 1:00 pm at St. Andrews Catholic Church. Interment Richland Cemetery. Please pray for the repose of his soul. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in his name to St. Andrews Catholic Church, 1621 Ferndale Avenue, or the Riverside Volunteer Fire Company, 615 Liberty Avenue.
