Obituary

Doris Yvonne Layton born January 9, 1928 to Stanford and Mildred Marie( Myers) Coughenour in Johnstown, PA and passed away in her home on Saturday, September 3, at 94 years of age. She always said she wanted to make it to 95 and got so close! She was the oldest of five children, Phyllis Thomas, Mary Alice Carrico, Mervin (deceased) Coughenour, and Donald Coughenour. She married Seward F. Layton in September 27, 1947. They had five children: Janice (David) Lincoln Beverly (Joseph) Demma, Frederick (Joyce) Layton, Susan (Jay) Constable, and Daniel Layton; 13 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.
Preceded in death by her husband Seward "Bud" Layton, her brother Mervin, her son Daniel Layton, great grand-daughter Lynnea and her parents. Her entire life was spent in Johnstown. At 16 years old, she joined the Seventh-day Adventist Church where she worked in the children's Sabbath School and vacation bible school. She was majorette in high school; she worked in the laboratory at Memorial Hospital, and never learned to drive! She made the best walnut tarts, mondel bread, and was a practical joker. She will be fondly remembered for making cookies for all of her children at Christmas. Her home had an open door policy and she and her husband sponsored many, many children and adults over the years through providing a roof over their head and warm meal to eat. Friends received 4-7PM Thursday at Henderson Funeral Home-East Hills, 2503 Bedford St., where funeral service will be held 11AM Friday. Interment, Forest Lawn Cemetery.
