Gallo, Colonel Gary Gene, 71, Rockwood, passed away April 13, 2018 at his residence. Born December 7, 1946 in Niagara Falls, NY he was the son of Kornell P. and Doris S. (Calvert) Gallo. Preceded in death by his parents and wife Linda (Geist) Gallo. Survived by children; Cristi L. Newbaker and fiancé Robert Yench of Rockwood, Todd C. Gallo of Johnstown; grandchildren, Keira and Candra Newbaker, Garrett, McKenzie and Madison Gallo; great grandchild, Baker Gallo; sister, Karen L. Gallo. Colonel Gallo began his military career in 1968 when he was commissioned. He assumed acting command of the 464th Chemical Brigade upon retirement of Colonel Kosowski in July 1993. Colonel Gallo was later officially appointed by the 99th Regional Readiness Command as commander of the 464th. In the fall of 1993, the brigade moved from the temporary location into the newly constructed U.S. Army Reserve Center on Goucher St. Colonel Gallo was the first commander to preside over the new center. His previous assignments include commanding the 485th Chemical Battalion and serving in various staff positions in both the 485th Chemical Battalion and the 464th Chemical Brigade. His military awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, The Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Reserved Medal, and the Army Service Ribbon, Humanitarian Service Medal, Army Reserve Components Overseas Training Ribbon. He was inducted into the Order of Dragon in 1996. He was a member of the Harmony Club and the American Legion. 1964 graduate of Johnstown High School, 1968 and 1975 graduate of IUP. He graduated from Army War College in 1990. He was a biology teacher at the Greater Johnstown Vo-Tech, was the former director of Central Sterile Supply at Conemaugh Hospital, and Guidance Counselor at Conemaugh Township High School. Friends will be received Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at John Henderson Company Funeral Home, 215 Central Ave. where a funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, Rockwood American Legion Post 279, officiating.
