Barry Gilchrist Obituary

Barry R. Gilchrist, 75, of Johnstown, died unexpectedly on May 3, 2025, at his home with his beloved wife of 45 years, Julia (Yuhas), by his side. The couple would have celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary on June 9. Born May 1, 1950, in Johnstown, he was the son of the late Robert M. and Helen A. (Yost) Gilchrist.
Barry was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Lance R.; and his cherished grand-dogs, CC and Abby.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Julia; loving daughter, Amanda (Whitney Menarcheck) of Pittsburgh, of whom he was incredibly proud; loyal grand-dog, Ziggy; brothers, Keith D. and Duane B. and nephew Keane, all of Wisconsin; and many dear friends, colleagues, and extended family members who will miss him deeply.
Barry was a man of tremendous intellect and even greater heart. A proud graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and History before going on to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from St. Francis University. He later received his Master's Degree in Taxation from Robert Morris University, becoming a respected expert in his field.
His professional life was marked by 48 years of dedicated service at Wessel & Company, where he retired with distinction as Shareholder Emeritus. He also gave back to his community through service, including as Chairman of the Finance Committee at Trinity Lutheran Church, where he was a longtime member.
Barry had a sharp mind, a big laugh, and an even bigger personality. He greeted everyone with enthusiasm and never missed a chance to treat friends and strangers alike to a round of drinks—especially at his favorite local spot, The Phoenix. He loved spending time with his wife and daughter, playing golf, treating his grand-dogs to ice cream, and yelling at the TV during Pittsburgh sports games and Yankees games.
He was a proud member of the American Legion, Croatian Hall, Polski Dom, Russian Club, Slovak Band Hall, and the Tremont Club, and a former member of the Johnstown Rotary Club.
Barry lived life with loyalty, laughter, and deep love for his family. His passing leaves a hole in the hearts of many, but his stories, jokes, and legendary presence will live on in the countless people lucky enough to have known him.
Friends and family will be received Wednesday, May 7th from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 6:00-8:00 p.m. at John Henderson Company Funeral Home, 215 Central Avenue. A service to celebrate Barry's life will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church on Thursday, May 8th at 9:00 a.m., officiated by Pastor Toby Holland, before proceeding to interment at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Trinity Lutheran Church or Family House (Pittsburgh) in his honor. John Henderson Company Funeral Home is serving the family.
