Barbara Ann (McIlwaine)Herdman
Born August 20, 1937 to James and Anna (Antes) McIlwaine in Clearfield, Pa. Predeceased by the love of her life, F. Paul Herdman (2013), parents, and sisters Eleanor Noel and Dorris Blake. She was a beloved daughter, mother, sister, aunt, professional, mentor and friend to many. Barbara lived on a rented farm in Clearfield County until the age of five. When the family moved to Philadelphia, Barbara attended grade school outside of the city prior to her family returning to the Northern Cambria area, purchasing a farm (at the age of 12). Barbara graduated as Valedictorian from Harmony High School and was voted "most likely to succeed" by her graduating class. Succeed she did! Barbara went on to nursing school and became a very well respected and decorated RN, Professional Nurse. Over the years she earned numerous degrees and certifications. Her career took her to many places and areas including The Children's Home, Philadelphia Hospital, Warren State Hospital, and ending her career at Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital where she served for over three decades. In her spare time, Barbara enjoyed giggling at Paul's shenanigans for their 52 years of marriage, painting farm and outdoor scenes, ceramics, and crocheting. Barbara was well known for her stellar cooking and baking skills. No one left her home without snacks or meals for later. Friends and family whom she loved had the privilege of receiving many gifts of her talents. Barbara was also an avid antique collector and enjoyed lunches with her retired nurse friends and colleagues. Barbara was a member of Roxbury St. Paul's United Methodist Church, CHSN and Alumni Association. Barbara was kind and generous but a woman who would not be pushed around. She was educated, knew what she wanted and made certain to communicate her opinions and wishes. Even in her last hours she was full of the sass and determination she will be remembered for. She had a positive lasting impact on every person she interacted with. She was courageous, strong, inspirational, full of joy, and had a ball of fire within her that showed those close to her what can be accomplished with faith, determination and persistence. Barbara lived her life fully despite challenges and heartache. Barbara spent her final years missing her Paul, playing with her beloved Yorkie, Fatz, serving as a doting Grammy to Mary and John; and visits, lots of laughs, as well as day trips with best friend and daughter, Carolyn. Barbara also looked forward to visits from her "special firefighter," John Butler who was a constant source of support, kindness, and bright spot in her days. She accepted and loved him as her own. Barbara had a hefty family tree and a family consisting of both blood ties and bonds formed from the heart. Barbara's reach was as far as it was wide. Barbara leaves those she loved with many cherished memories of a beautiful soul. A special thank you to Martha Bernard who has been a constant support and loving friend. Also thank you to Lynley Arendas, Brenda Hummel, Lauren Lazzari, Erika Leap, Nick Mezyk, Donna Shawley,Kayla Shearman, Walt and Sharon Wojnarowsky and Tricia Weslager for years of friendship, care, love and support. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Barbara's memory to Cambria County Regional Firefighters Assocation Fire School, PO Box 244; Saint Michael, PA 15951 in memory of Paul and Barbara Herdman.
