Shirley Katherine (Hyland) Koop

Koop- Shirley Katherine (Hyland) age 94, died Monday, December 9 at Westmont Woods in Johnstown.  Born in Johnstown in 1925, Shirley graduated from Johnstown High School in 1944 and the University of Pennsylvania Nursing School in Philadelphia in 1948.  After graduation, Shirley worked as a staff nurse in the emergency and receiving unit of Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital until 1950 and went on to serve as a nurse for Bethlehem Steel Company until 1952.  She also worked as a visiting nurse with community nursing in Johnstown before beginning to raise her family.  From 1971 to 1979, she served as a staff nurse in the blood program for the Keystone Chapter of the American Red Cross.  She moved to Central Florida in 1982 where she worked as a nurse for Florida Hospital South in Orlando for ten years before she retired and returned to Johnstown.  Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, William M. Hyland and Katherine (Ward) Hyland; brother, William Hyland; son, Richard A. Koop and followed in death by daughter-in-law, Patricia A. (Walsh) Koop. Survived by her daughter, Katherine C. (Koop) Stephenson, wife of Richard J. Stephenson, Johnstown; Beth L. Koop, Orlando; grandchildren Katherine E. (Koop) Irwin and her husband, Khip J. Irwin, Pittsburgh; Christopher P. Koop and his wife, Meredith A. (Lattanzio) Koop, Pittsburgh; Nicholas J. Muccigrosso and his wife, Meghan E. (Johnston) Muccigrosso, Orlando; and Teresa L. Muccigrosso, Orlando, along with four great-grandchildren.  Shirley was a long-time member of First Lutheran Church, Johnstown. She was an avid reader, instinctive gardener, and devoted mother and grandmother.  Memorial gifts may be made to Cambria County Library or First Lutheran Church building preservation. Friends will be received Saturday from 11:00 until time of funeral service at 1:00 at John Henderson Co. Funeral Home, 215 Central Ave. followed by a private burial at Maple Springs Cemetery in Jerome.
