THOMAS, Frederick H. Jr. "Myrt", 92, Thomas Mills, formerly of Westmont, died June 18, 2017 at Laurelwood Care Center. He was preceded in death by his parents Frederick H. and Catherine Thomas; his wife, the former Elfrieda (Fritzie) Newbaker; and his sister Catherine Lehr. He is survived by his sons, Frederick H. III and his wife Billie (Saylor) of Thomas Mills, Peter J. and his wife Lydia (Saylor) of Davidsville, and Toby R. and his wife Jackie (Murray) of Berywn, PA. He is also survived by his sister Frances Carpenter of CT and her sons John (Michele), James (Laura), and Tom Carpenter; by his brother-in-law Phil Newbaker of Johnstown; by grandchildren Jennifer (Jim) Campbell, Patrick Thomas, Kate (Eric) King, Gillian (Eric) Martin, Kortney (Jason) Richter, Corey (Kat)Thomas, and Harrison Thomas; and by step-grandchildren Stacey Sotosky, Stephen (Erin) Sotosky, Tim (Jackey) Sotosky, Katie (Ian) Barrowclough, Haley Naugle, Adam Naugle, Eric Naugle, Patrick McDonnell, and Tim McDonnell. Myrt also had seven great grandchildren and eight step-great grandchildren. He was a graduate of Johnstown Veterans High School and the U.S. Navy Quartermasters School. He served in the Navy during WWII on the USS LST 997 and the USS LST 621, having received the European Theater Ribbon, the Pacific Theater Ribbon, the American Theater Ribbon, the Victory Medal, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. He worked for many years in the family business, John Thomas and Sons on Vine Street in Johnstown, before breaking out on his own in the decorating and drapery business. Myrt was a former Boy Scout leader and volunteer for the Red Cross. In his younger years he enjoyed hunting, fishing, making lead soldiers, tinkering in his shop, and the many paddling and camping trips he took with family along the Shenandoah River. Myrt was an amazing and graceful dancer and studied at the Gene Kelly School of Dance. He was a lifelong member of First Lutheran Church on Vine Street in Johnstown. Family will receive friends on Thursday  from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at the John Henderson Funeral Home, 215 Central Avenue where a memorial service will be held Friday at 1:00 pm, Pastor Michael McKool. Inurnment Grandview Cemetery.
