I met Ann around 18 years ago playing Tangleword, an online version of Boggle. Back in the day, we had a tight-knit community of word-game enthusiasts who shared life's trials and triumphs in two-minute intervals...the length of intermission between rounds.
I know it will be hard for some to understand how people can bond over an online game, but many lasting friendships were formed. Ann and I were pregnant at the same time, her with Leah and me with Henry. For years following we joked about our kids being girlfriend and boyfriend. When Tangleword went away, we became friends on Facebook. When a new boggle-like site was formed, Serpentine, there we were, able to play again with many of our old friends.
As a player, Ann went by "Buffcat." She will always be Buffy to me. She was warm and friendly and wickedly good with words.
To Ann's family, and especially Lauren, Joel and Leah, my deepest sympathies are with you in your grief. I hope you will find comfort in knowing that your mom has friends across the country and around the world who are mourning with you. She touched so many with her good nature and generous spirit. God bless you all.
