Emma Frieko Obituary

Emma Regina Frieko, 91, Johnstown, died at home on March 29, 2024. Born December 4, 1932, daughter of Cyril B, Sr. and Margaret (Beiter) Engbert. Preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband John Edmund Frieko Sr. to whom she was married for 58 years; her son, Michael; brother, Cyril Engbert Jr.; and sisters, Rita Dunegan and Margaret Mary Case. Survived by children, Emma (Michael Mikolaitis); John; Ellen (Robert Kyler); Roberta (Owen Winkler); Therese (Jason McKinley); Stephen; and Mary Ann (Ryan Regula); grandchildren, Abby and Riley Winkler; and Ethan and Ava McKinley; and sisters, Josephine Hennessey, and Theresa Rovan. She was a devout catholic and member of the Church of the Visitation of the BVM, where she taught CCD and helped in the CCD school office, assisted with Bingo and church dinners for many years, as well as was a member of the Rosary Alter Society and the Mother Seton Guild. She was also active at St. Benedict's, St. Patrick's, and St. Andrew's churches in her early years. Emma was a member of the Third Order of Carmelites out of New Baltimore, PA. Emma was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, Class of 1950, and was awarded a scholarship to Mount Aloysius College when she graduated. She spent over 30 years assisting with the Engbert family businesses where she was the director of operations for the former Johnstown Nipple Works, managed the former Surplus Tool Store in Moxham, and assisted with the store in Hornerstown in Johnstown, PA. After high school, Emma attended Art School in the evenings at Johnstown High School and enjoyed sketching and painting. In her twenties, Emma attended nursing school and worked at Lee Hospital. After she married, Emma was also sales lady for Avon, Fuller Brush, and Watkins for many years and enjoyed visiting with her many customers and friends. Emma loved gardening and tending to her beautiful irises, tulips, daffodils, hydrangeas, as well as many other flowers and vegetables. Emma loved to dance and she and her husband John enjoyed dancing. She belonged to the Red Hat Society and enjoyed gatherings with the ladies. Emma was a loving wife, mother, and was beloved by many family members and friends. She was strong-willed and loving, very kind and generous, enjoyed interacting with everyone, and had a wonderful sense of humor. She will be deeply missed. Friends received 5-7PM Monday at John Henderson Company Funeral Home, 215 Central Ave, and Tuesday from 10AM until the time of funeral mass at 11AM at the Church of the Visitation of the BVM with Father John Slovikovski as celebrant. Committal St. John Gualbert Cemetery.
