Lawrence W. Roberts

Lawrence W. Roberts, 91, “Pinky”, “Red”, Johnstown, passed away March 14, 2017, at McCullough Place. Born January 30, 1926, in Johnstown, son of John F. and Olive M. (Garman) Roberts. Preceded in death by parents; loving wife, Mary Katherine (Shull) Roberts; brother, William and wife Jackie; and sister, Mary and husband, Hugo Erdman; and nephew, Bruce. He is survived by  nieces and nephews, Benay, Debra, Ruth, Kevin, Mary Anne, Russ, David, Robert, and Joyce; and many friends that he made during his journey through life. Larry was an honored US Navy veteran, having served during World War II. After returning home from the war, he worked for Alko Express as a night dock worker, earning 69 cents per hour, and with no benefits. Larry also drove trucks for Motor Freight and Halls. He retired from Bestform, where he drove the New York route. He previously attended Moxham Lutheran Church. He was a proud retired member of I.B.T. Local Union #110, where he was a dedicated officer serving as vice president on Local #110’s  executive board for 20 years. Struggling through the Depression, and determined to help his family and friends have a better life, Larry worked with the union, and fought to secure the rights for workers today. He served on the Westmont Election Board. He was an Honorary Deputy Sherriff in Cambia County, and was a member of various military organizations.  A heartfelt thank you is extended to the “guardian angels” who were there when Larry needed help; especially to the staff at McCullough Place, Viaquest Hospice, and AIS Health and Home Care, for their compassionate care. Friends received from 11am until the hour of memorial service at noon on Monday, March 27, 2017, at John Henderson Company Funeral Home, 215 Central Ave., with Rev. Andrew Broucher officiating. Military rite will be conducted following the memorial service by Chas. Menoher Post 155 VFW Ritual Team.
