Katherine Elizabeth (Smolen) Karan

Katherine Elizabeth Karan, “Katie”, 95, Johnstown, died September 16, 2017, at Harmony House. Born November 6, 1921, in Johnstown, daughter of Albert  and Anna (Totas) Smolen. Preceded in death by parents; husband Duzan; brothers, Andy, John, Joe, Steven, and Jacob; and sister, Anna Lorens. Survived by children, Barbara (Ron) Cassidy, Johnstown; Maryann Cucuro, Nokomis, FL; Douglas (Lois), Evington, VA; Kathi Margeson, Forest, VA; Nick (Pam), Oxford, OH; and Patricia Ann, Sterling, VA. She leaves behind 12 grandkids; and 14 great grandkids. Also survived by sisters, Helen Bistransky, Margaret Faranda, and Rose Campanella. Katie worked at Harris and Boyer Bakery for over 22 years. She also enjoyed working at Kentucky Fried Chicken, and donating her time at St. Vincent DePaul in her later years. Katie excelled at bowling all of her life , and could be found either at Westmont or Richland Lanes surrounded by friends. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Wednesday, at 10 am, at  Henderson Funeral Home-East Hills, 2503 Bedford St., with Father Peter Crowe officiating. Interment, Grandview Cemetery, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
