John W. Ponas

PONAS, John W., 96, Johnstown, died September 24, 2015, at Memorial Medical Center. He was born August 9, 1919, in Newburyport, MA, son of the late Wuly and Agnes (Kuzun) Ponas. Preceed in death by his wife of 54 years, Movene L. (Martin) Ponas; daughter, Marcia L., wife of Richard Warrick, Lawrence, KS; and sister, Olga, wife of Herbert Jessop, Warrick, RI; He is survived by a sister, Jennie Pecevich, Arroyo Grande, CA; as well as cousins, nieces and nephews. John was a graduate of Duquesne University and the University of Pittsburgh. He was employed at the former Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital as Director of the Pharmacy Department for 34 years, having retired in 1981. Along with his wife, he traveled extensively throughout North America, Europe, and the near and far East. John was a past president of the former Cambria-Somerset Pharmacy Association and the Johnstown Kiwanis Club. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon and member of the Board of Trustees and the Finance Committee. There will be no public visitation. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at John Henderson Company Funeral Home, 215 Central Ave., Rev. Alice Tondora, officiating. Interment, Oak Cemetery.
